POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general
supervision of the Background Unit Supervisor, this position is responsible for
the maintenance of records and documents pertaining to all background
investigations that are completed. The
Background Unit Specialist will review and investigate all employee records
pertaining to the criminal background investigation for employment and will
review the background investigations pertaining to vendors, volunteers and
chaperones. The incumbent of this
position will make recommendations and provide appropriate notifications based
on the review and investigations conducted. This position requires familiarity
with Prince George’s County Public Schools’ security procedures, processes
related to employee and volunteer fingerprinting, and on-boarding procedures
for new employees.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Assists with the
retrieval and review of background investigation responses from the Criminal
Justice Information System (CJIS) electronic mail system; including notices of
arrests and expungements, as well as letters and reprints;
Acts as a liaison
with CJIS, Security Services, Human Resources, the court system, and other law
enforcement agencies, as appropriate;
Maintains the processes
for scanning and storing background responses for retrieval;
Maintains a database
of background results and prepares reports for the Background Unit Supervisor, Human
Resources, Security Services, and Employee and Labor Relations;
Makes recommendations
regarding employment, vendor, chaperone and volunteer actions based on
information received through the criminal background investigation process;
Notifies employment
teams and other appropriate management individuals of information received
through the criminal background process. This includes information that arises
after employment or start of activity with PGCPS;
Assists employment
teams, Employee and Labor Relations, and other appropriate individuals with
follow-up investigations, as requested;
Ensures that
employees or persons subject to background checks complete the release and
authorization forms;
Reviews and
interprets court documents and papers obtained by leaders/specialists or
through visits to courts, police departments, etc.;
Works collaboratively
with the Employee Services Center; and
Performs other duties
as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree
from an accredited college or university with a significant emphasis on Criminal
Justice related coursework, or (5) years of work related experience, preferred;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the
required knowledge skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the
position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
