POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the Associate Editor is responsible for drafting, copyediting, manuscript formatting, and proofreading of day-to-day and other outgoing office correspondences. The nature of the work performed requires executive-level content and substantive editorial review quality along with thorough knowledge of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) organization, functions, personnel, and programs. The incumbent must be able to work effectively under frequent deadline pressure, be detailed oriented and have strong organizational and multitasking skills.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Provides drafting, copyediting, manuscript formatting, and proofreading of day-to-day outgoing office correspondence;

Meets strict deadlines, handles highly confidential material, and works closely with administrators and high-level officials in Prince George’s County Public School System;

Works to achieve the goals determined by PGCPS and the Chief of Staff;

Works closely with colleagues and staff to determine best presentation of content;

Suggests efficiencies in workflow and precision;

Exercises considerable initiative, sensitivity, sound judgment, and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills;

Provides secretarial support including the operation of office equipment, computer applications, answering phones, greeting visitors, photocopying, and maintaining files  for the executive assistant/director;

Works independently to see that assigned tasks are completed; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Thorough knowledge of the general organization and functions of Prince George’s County Public School System;

Must have demonstrated copy-editing and proofreading experience;

Considerable knowledge of business English, spelling, general vocabulary, punctuation, and arithmetic;

Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures;

Strong proofreading, editing, communication, and interpersonal skills;

Excellent organizational and time-management skills;

Ability to work in a team environment while maintaining a strong individual contribution;

Ability to work collaboratively and to carry out continuing assignments requiring the organization of materials, the handling of administrative details, the preparation of reports with minimal supervision;

Proficient in the use of technology systems such as, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access), Google, Google Docs, report generating software, and be skilled in the use of technology for work related research;

Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS);

Flexibility and ability to work in fast-paced, high-volume, rapidly changing environment;

Cultural sensitivity and collaborations with others along with effective oral and written communication skills with a focus on accuracy and high quality customer service; and

Ability to properly handle and maintain confidential information.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Minimum three (3) years progressive responsibility with a focus in copy-editing and proofreading. or a combination of equivalent years of experience, education and skills that would meet the position requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


May supervise assigned administrative support staff.
