The Safe Schools Reporting Act of 2005 mandates that the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) require county boards of education to report incidents of harassment or intimidation (bullying) against students attending a public school under the jurisdictions of the county board.  The law further specifies procedures for reporting these acts, including specific guidelines for completing the Harassment and Intimidation (Bullying) form.  Additionally, the law requires MSDE to report to the Maryland General Assembly the following:

A description of the act constituting the harassment or intimidation (bullying)

    • The age of the victim and alleged perpetrator
    • The allegation of the alleged perpetrator’s motive
    • A description of the investigation of the complaint and any corrective action taken by the appropriate school authorities
    • The number of days a student is absent from school, if any, as a result of the incident
    • The number of false allegations reported
The following definition of harassment and intimation (bullying) is included on the Harassment or Intimidation (Bullying) Form and will help guide students and parents as they are completing this form (click below to access the form):

“Harassment and intimidation (bullying) means conduct, including verbal conduct, that creates a hostile educational environment by substantially interfering with a student’s educational benefits, opportunities, or performance, or with a student’s physical or psychological well-being, and is motivated by an actual or a perceived personal characteristic such as race, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or disability or is threatening or seriously intimidating.”

All students and staff have been made aware of the systemic focus on eliminating bullying from our schools.  The Harassment or Intimidation (Bullying) Form has been placed in all classrooms, the main and guidance offices, and in the MLK Dining Hall.  Parents can locate the form on the MLK website under Parent Resources or on the Internet at the following link: http://www1.pgcps.org/antibullying/index.aspx?id=107808 . The MLK staff is committed to providing a safe and orderly learning environment for all students.  Doing so will take a commitment by ALL stakeholders.

Prizes and Incentives:  Our Renaissance and the Eye on the Prize programs encourage positive behaviors and academic success.  Incentives are given to reinforce student success in class as well as in the hallways and cafeteria.  Teachers also welcome incentives for reaching goals and winning competitions among teams. These incentive programs help us create and maintain a positive and effective school climate for all.  Sustaining a supply of prizes and incentives can be difficult.  Donations of gift certificates, movie tickets, books, and cool middle school stuff would great.  Please contact Mrs. Clontz if you have access to appropriate prizes or incentives and are willing to make a donation to our programs.
