POSITION SUMMARY:Supervises and takes the lead in the repair and maintenance activities of a school garage or a bus lot.  This is a highly skilled journeyman automotive mechanic work distinguished from the class of Automotive Mechanics I and II by the responsibility for planning, assigning and supervising the work of Automotive Mechanics, Apprentices, Trades Helpers, Automotive Machinists and other personnel as assigned.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assigns, supervises, instructs, sublets and performs preventive maintenance and repairs on school buses and automotive equipment;

Directs and inspects the work of Automotive Mechanics, Garage men, Automotive Machinists, Apprentices and Trades Helpers;

Recommends tools and replacement equipment to be used by the school system;

Determines and supervises repairs to equipment;

Maintains files and prepares reports;

Directs a preventive Maintenance Program for school vehicles;

Instructs employees on the proper use of equipment;

Assists in state safety inspections of school buses;

Responds to work locations during emergencies; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Thorough knowledge of the standard practices and tools of the automotive mechanic trade;

Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline engines;

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;

Some knowledge of business practices applicable to garage management;

Ability to plan, layout and supervise the work of journeyman automotive mechanics;

Ability to carry out oral and written directions;

Ability to summarize or extract reports from records;

Ability to make arithmetical computations and tabulations; and

Ability to get along well with others; good judgment; and must be in good physical condition.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school, with attendance at a vocational or trade school highly desirable, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade required.  Must have considerable experience at the level of an Automotive Mechanic II, including some experience in a supervisory capacity at a large garage or service station.   

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.  Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required; CDL Class "A" with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake) preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervisory responsibilities over the work of Automotive Mechanics, Apprentices, Trades Helpers, Automotive Machinists and other personnel, as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
