POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the General Counsel, the individual will be responsible for representing the Prince George’s County Board of Education and its employees in Worker’s Compensation matters in State and Federal Courts and before administrative agencies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide assistance to
the General Counsel, Risk Manager, and the Board’s Third-Party Claims
Administrator, on review and evaluation of Worker’s Compensation claims; Represent the Board
of Education of Prince George’s County on Workers’ Compensation claims and
related litigation before the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission; Represent Board of
Education of Prince George’s County and its employees in appeals before the
Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, Court of Appeals of Maryland and Federal
Appeals; Review and evaluate
subrogation claims and represent Prince George’s County Board of Education in
court proceedings and mediations on subrogation matters; Assist the General
Counsel and Risk Manager in review, monitoring, evaluation, management and
supervision of litigation matters handled by outside counsel; Review and evaluate
contract documents; Perform other duties
as required by the General Counsel and Risk Manager associated with defense
litigation representation and litigation management; Participate in
in-service training of school system administrative staff and employees on
Worker’s Compensation issues impacting the school system; and Perform other duties
as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Legal experience in
representing a school board, or public/private organization with
responsibilities in a majority of the content areas listed under Duties and
Responsibilities; Considerable
knowledge of public school administration and statutory immunity provisions and
insurance requirements of school systems in the State of Maryland; Substantial
experience in mediation/arbitration; Substantial
experience in presenting and/or defending claims before administrative agencies; Demonstrated
insurance defense counsel with litigation experience at trial and appellate
court levels; Demonstrated
leadership and administrative competency; Demonstrated written
and oral communication skills; Ability to manage and
work independently on large volume litigation practice; and Effective human
relations skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Doctorate of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school; Admission to the Maryland Bar.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervisory responsibilities.
