POSITION SUMMARY: Performs monitoring, communication and clerical work involved in the operation of a computerized central alarm station. The incumbent of this position is responsible for an assigned tour of duty monitoring school burglar alarm systems, fire alarm systems and maintaining communication with maintenance and plant operation personnel, and County Police and Fire Departments. Work includes maintaining logs of activities, and general record keeping. Incumbent works under general supervision of the Supervisor of Technical Services. Work is reviewed through appraisal of day-to-day effectiveness. This position requires evening and midnight hours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operates and continuously monitors computerized burglar
alarm system to detect any abnormal conditions in schools; Dispatches County Police when their services are needed; Operates base station radio receiving and transmitting
equipment to contact maintenance and school bus drivers after hours; Receives after hours telephone calls for assistance
regarding school personnel or school property and makes appropriate
notification; In emergencies contacts Fire Departments, gas or electric
companies as appropriate, and keeps supervisors advised; Notifies proper personnel in maintenance and plant
operation when emergency situations exist and immediate response is required; Maintains logs of alarms received and contacts made, and
prepares reports; Reports any deficiencies in the operation of equipment;
and Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS Some
knowledge of and skills in the operation of an IBM computer assisted dispatch
system; Skill
in operating the less complex types of radio transmitting and receiving
computer; Some
knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; Ability
to transmit oral messages, and to speak and hear clearly and distinctly; Ability
to follow oral and written instructions; and
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate with some training and experience in basic radio communication activities and with some clerical and report writing experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervisory responsibilities.
