POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Coordinating Supervisor of Special Education Early Childhood is responsible for providing direction to supervisors, specialists, and staff for infants and toddlers and preschool special education on the development and implementation of programs in the early childhood area. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitoring the implementation of special education early childhood programs and initiatives with school system personnel and community groups, and executing administrative responsibilities as required;

Collaborating with Infant and Toddlers and Pre-K Special Education supervisors, specialists, and staff on professional development needs;

Collaborating with external agencies to promote a birth to five continuum for the community;

Facilitating with Early Childhood and Special Education staff to secure grants that will benefit the initiatives and programs offered by the department;

Assisting in overseeing and providing guidance to the unit staff;

Attending Board of Education meetings as requested to respond to programmatic inquiries;

Representing the department at meetings and conferences as requested to give and receive information;

Serving as a panelist, presenter, and facilitator at leadership conferences for principals and school staffs statewide;

Writing and disseminating communication documents including newsletters, brochures, compilation reports, internal and external memoranda, surveys, profiles, evaluations, and concept papers;

Maintaining strict fiscal accountability through the review of financial documents and procurement requests for supervisors and approving payroll;

Preparing reports required by the Chief Academic Officer and responding to informational requests by other school system offices and outside organizations;

Evaluating assigned personnel in alignment with articulated Board of Education personnel guidelines and procedures;

Assisting the Director in the interviewing and hiring of department personnel;

Serving in the absence of the Director when requested, and

Communicating department directives and serving as a liaison to the school system and other agency personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Expertise related to compliance and early childhood federal, state and local policies and procedures;

Ability to monitor the implementation of the curriculum and collect feedback to support the continuous improvement of instructional guides and instruction in schools;

Knowledge of current research and trends in education with special emphasis on curriculum, instruction, and assessment;

Knowledge of multicultural teaching approaches and materials;

Ability to work effectively with classroom teachers, instructional specialists, and professional organizations in providing rigorous academic experiences for early childhood students;

Experience developing early childhood curriculum and assessments aligned with local and common state core standards; and

Demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals preferred 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:   Master's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in educational administration with two to three years in a supervisory position or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge; skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in this position; Minimum of five (5) years of teaching or related experience in the field of Early Childhood Education required; Minimum of 3 years of administrative experience required.    

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: APC required in SPED Early Learning or Elementary Education or related field; Administrative I endorsement required; Certified in Framework for Teaching observations preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   Supervision of the Special Education Infant and Toddlers and the Pre-K Special Education Early Learning Supervisors.
