POSITION SUMMARY:Operates a specially equipped school bus in transporting students and authorized personnel to and from schools. Employees in this class are responsible for giving door-to-door service in the safe operation of a school bus transporting orthopedic students. General supervision is received from the Bus Lot Foreman and/or Assistant Bus Lot Foreman. Training is received from the Bus Driver Trainer.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Gives door-to-door bus service to each
individual orthopedic student; Works with administrators in a professional
manner in reference to any problems arising on the bus; Prepares a neat, concise and accurate run sheet
for each of the bus trips; Deals directly with parents on a one-to-one
basis concerning any problems with pick-up and delivery time, absenteeism and
any personal problems the children are encountering in riding the bus; Attends periodic meetings with school personnel
to be informed and award of specific needs of students as necessary; Should be familiar with the care and treatment
of handicapped students; Inspects bus and checks gas, oil, water and all
lights, brakes, lift and safety equipment before driving; prepares reports of
accidents and incidents which occur on the bus; Attends monthly safety meetings; Keeps a child information notebook for use on
the bus up-to-date; Prepares monthly report of number of children
transported and bus mileage, when requested; works as a team member with school
bus aide to insure proper loading/uploading of orthopedic students and insures
that students are properly secured for safe transportation; May transport students on field trips and
outings; and Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Good knowledge of driving safety and
courtesy; Good knowledge of the operation of
automobiles and buses; Good knowledge of the local streets and
road system; Good knowledge of State regulations and
laws pertaining to the operation of
school buses; Good knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws and
Regulations of the State Board of Education; Some knowledge of first aid; Ability to deal patiently and
effectively with students; Ability to understand and carry out oral
and written instructions; Ability to deal courteously and
effectively with school principals and parents; Interest in and liking for children; Ability to maintain effective control
over groups of children; Ability to work in tandem with other
school system employees; and Must be in good physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Individuals transporting students must have at least three (3) years of driving experience and have attained the minimum age of twenty-one (21) years. Must have the ability to meet special training and qualifications as set forth by Prince George’s County Public Schools.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B with passenger (P) endorsement and school bus (S) endorsement; with no more than two (2) current points.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May supervise bus aide.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, see, and drive. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, lift, pull, push, grasp, climb, balance, and conduct repetitive wrist and/or hand movements. Employee must have the ability to sit in the bus driver seat, reach the steering wheel and grasp with both hands, reach the pedals, and wear a seat belt properly. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. and/or 100 lbs. when operating a wheelchair lift and assisting a special-needs student.
