Scholar of the Week: Bowie High School Senior Natalya Brown

While growing up in Jamaica, Bowie High School senior Natalya Brown often accompanied her mom to work at Petrojam Limited, the largest petroleum and gasoline corporation. Natalya would roam the building and stare out of a large glass window overlooking the entire plant.

“The scent of petroleum, diesel and ethanol permeated my childhood,” said Natayla. Now, she plans to double major in chemical engineering and business.

Natalya holds a 4.09 GPA and takes Advanced Placement courses in Calculus AB, Language and Microeconomics. She is a member of the National Honor and Dance Societies, STEM and Debate Clubs, and Teen Advisory Board. She is also chief of staff of the Student Government Association. Natalya volunteers at nursing homes and her church. She also enjoys dancing and cooking in her spare time.

She has applied to the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, Howard University, North Carolina A&T University and University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Natalya credits her teachers and counselors at Bowie High School with preparing her for the future.

“I have learned valuable life skills, how to work with others and most importantly knowledge that I am able to pass on to others,” she said.
