POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Transportation Supervisor manages the daily operation of pupil transportation services. Work in this class involves planning, organizing, coordinating, reporting and resolving issues and managing functions related to the safe and efficient operation of the school bus system.     

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Supervises all transportation personnel in assigned geographic area;

Performs as an on-duty supervisor in the central transportation office in rotation with other supervisors when buses are in service, as needed and assigned;

Recruits, interviews, selects, assigns, supervises, and evaluates bus drivers under policies adopted by the Board of Education;

Contributes input to the maintenance of inter-office personnel records for employees under his/her supervision;

Assists in the development of input in the planning and scheduling of school bus routes through review and evaluation which includes routes and schedules for special education students and magnet school students;

Assesses road conditions during inclement weather and other conditions that impact the safe operation of transportation service;

Answers mail and telephone inquiries from persons requesting information on bus routes and stop locations;

Promptly resolves employee, parent and/or student transportation issues in a customer focused, responsive and professional manner;

Assists in analyzing data for budget development and continuous improvement through evaluation of current school year and future developments, i.e., number of buses used, number of sub-drivers vs. hiring of regular drivers, additional programs such as a new special education center vs. the need for more bus aides, condition of buses, overtime usage, etc.;

Plans, organizes, coordinates, facilitates and evaluates all facets of school bus driver and attendant training;

Investigates school bus accidents and ensures proper reports are completed;

Implements, coordinates, and administers annual safe driving awards programs for Prince George’s County Public Schools and the State; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Considerable knowledge of the operation and scheduling of school buses;

Considerable knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws, Regulations of the State Board of State of Education, and knowledge of the road system of Prince George’s County;

Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and/or the experience and ability to use office equipment and software including computers, Google docs, email, etc.;

Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

Ability to provide an atmosphere of good human relations with employees, peers, students, parents, school administrators, members of the community and other stakeholders; and

Ability to supervise effectively and perform administrative functions independently.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in transportation, education or public administration or related transportation leadership experience beyond six (6) years. At least five (5) years of experience in the school transportation field.

 

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possesses or has the ability and willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervising all transportation personnel in assigned geographic area or as directed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
