POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the
Instructional Supervisor, the Translation Services Coordinator serves schools
and offices in Prince George's County Public Schools by coordinating and
ensuring translation of parent communication documents in predominant languages,
by request. The incumbent serves as a
lead worker for all written translation services, giving guidance and
assistance to other translators in the office, and performing translations and
proofing documents. Direct supervision
is not normally given in this class, and all work assigned is expected to be
carried through to timely completion.
The Translation Services Coordinator will be responsible for preparation
and implementation of guidelines for translation timelines and workflow
expectations. The Translation Services Coordinator is responsible for all
administrative and workflow management components of the provision of written
translations to schools and offices.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Assists with recruiting
and assessing translators to support written translations;
Assists with parent
needs, as required;
Designs, implements,
and updates translator training tools, presentations and related materials;
Trains translators on Prince
George’s County Public Schools’ specific vocabulary and processes;
Trains translation team
and serve as lead administrator for CAT (computer assisted translation) and TM
(translation memory) tools;
Conducts in-service
trainings for Prince George’s County Public Schools’ staff regarding
translation services;
Serves as
administrative lead for translation workflow and timelines;
Coordinates assignment
of translation work to translation team;
Coordinates and
maintains centralized document library of translations;
Clarifies process of
accessing translation services for Prince George’s County Public School’s
staff;
Maintains statistics on
use of translation services by Prince George’s County Public Schools and
offices;
Generates appropriate
reports upon request;
Facilitates written
translations and publications consistent with State and Federal guidelines for
written parent communications;
Works closely with
contractual vendors for requested translations in less commonly requested
languages;
Provides the immediate
supervisor with justification of funding and fiscal priorities, as needed;
Authorizes final
proofread translations for schools and central offices; and
Performs other duties
as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Bilingual
in English and Spanish in all four communicative areas;
Strong
understanding of grammar technicalities of English and Spanish, including
colloquialisms and how to translate them;
Ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system
officials and employees;

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree or
Associates’ degree from an accredited college or university required. A minimum
of five (5) years’ experience as a
translator of written documents, and working with linguistically diverse
populations.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Prior documented
training in written translation or certification by American Translator’s Association (ATA)
preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
