POSITION SUMMARY:


Performs semiskilled and routine tasks as a helper to a journeyman tradesman. The work of this class is of a routine semiskilled nature involving responsibility for willing and efficient performance of assigned tasks. An incumbent of this position works under the supervision of a journeyman tradesman who assigns work to be done. A Trades Helper is expected to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty. The work is carefully checked in process and upon completion.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Carries materials, tools and supplies for journeyman tradesman;

Performs trades tasks of the journeyman level on occasion;

Builds forms and performs other rough carpentry jobs;

Keeps typical tools and equipment in proper working order;

Assists in Mason work, blacktop work, and concrete work;

Assists in Grounds Maintenance work, landscaping, and may operate tractors and mowers;

Assists Electricians and Electronics Technicians in installing, repairing and maintaining electrical equipment and systems, including conduit, wiring, motor generators, transformers, panel boards, boiler controls, electronic devices, and specialized equipment;

Measures, cuts, and carries wire, conduit tools;

Assists Plumbers in installing, repairing and maintaining plumbing fixtures and lines;

Assists HVAC Mechanics in installing and repairing equipment;

Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipes; checks for leaks and repairs pumps and fixtures;

Assists Roofer in maintenance and repair of slag roofs, gutters, down spouts and kitchen hardware;

Assists Painters and Glaziers in painting and replacing glass;

Measures for parking lane lines and other painting on blacktop surfaces;

Glazier of windows;

Cleans up after work is completed; and

Assists in other maintenance operation and duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Some familiarity with common practices, processes, materials, and tools of one of the skilled trades;

Mechanical aptitude; and

Interest in and willingness to learn a trade.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


High school graduate preferably supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship or trade school and/or experience as a helper to a skilled tradesman.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Prince George’s County Apprentice Electrician License (Electric/Electronic Shops only); Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.

 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


Deemed as essential personnel; may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.
