POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Service Writer diagnoses mechanical problems and writes repair orders, performs, mechanical work as required on the shop floor, supervises the garage in the absence of the foreman.  This is skilled work involving extensive experience as an automotive mechanic.  As an employee in this class, the incumbent will determine the repair work needed on a vehicle through diagnosis, road testing, etc. and write a work order for repair.  This position performs mechanical work as required and gives assistance to automotive mechanics, trades helper, and service mechanics.  This incumbent will exercise independent judgment when recommending prioritizing of all garage work to the Garage Coordinator.  Supervision is exercised over automotive mechanics, trades helpers and service attendants.  The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Automotive Foreman II.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Diagnoses mechanical problems and writes repair orders;

Performs mechanical work as required on the shop floor on a daily basis;

Gives assistance to automotive mechanics, trades helper, and service mechanics;

Oversees the garage operation in the absence of the foreman; and

Performs related work as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Considerable mechanical diagnostic skills;

Thorough knowledge of the standard practices and tools of the automotive mechanical trade;

Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines;

Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;

Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions;

Ability to make simple arithmetical computations or tabulations;

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems;

Skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in motor repair and adjustment work;

Ability to plan, layout and supervise the work of automotive mechanics, trades helpers and automotive service attendants;

Skills in adjusting defects in automotive equipment;

Mechanical aptitude; Needs hands-on-experience in the use of the Faster Fleet Management System; and

Ability to review/edit and make corrections (accountability of parts, mechanics time, etc.)

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Extensive experience as automotive mechanic and completion of a high school course, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.  Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required or the ability to obtain within the probationary period for new employees or within 6 months of obtaining the position for current PGCPS employees; CDL Class "A" with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake) preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly encouraged.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
