POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs
skilled work in the maintenance and repair of security alarm systems located in
schools, buildings and on bus lots throughout the school system. An employee in
this class performs a variety of skilled tasks in accordance with standard
practices of the electronics and burglar alarm trades. Work assignments are
either generated by the employee, who after analysis of alarm data determines a
problem exists, or through both oral and written communication from the
supervisor. The incumbent is allowed latitude for independent judgment because
of technical nature of the position. Work is usually performed independently,
but reviewed in terms of the accomplishment of objectives.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Analyzes on a daily basis all alarm records in
order to set up service calls and establish work priorities; maintains and
repairs alarm or similar reporting systems, including multiplexing telephone
and/or cable equipment with which it interfaces;
Trouble shoots, diagnosis trouble and makes
minor repairs; replaces reporting units as required;
Meets with administrators to discuss breaking
and entering and security problems; surveys building for requests of additional
equipment;
Reads and interprets wiring diagrams; tests
circuits using a variety of standard and specialized test equipment;
Responds to office or school sites when
equipment failure is indicated; performs preventive maintenance on equipment;
Meets with telephone company personnel, county
and private contractors to supply technical information on security equipment;
walk-test and evaluate new installations by contractors;
Diagnosis repairs or replaces various types of
electronic alarm equipment; possesses a working knowledge of both AC and DC
voltage;
Packs up equipment that can be repaired by
contracting organization and ships it out to them with a written request; tests
repaired equipment when returned; and
Performs related additional duties as required
and is on 24 hour call.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of burglar alarm and
fire alarm systems, their uses and maintenance;
Good knowledge of electronics and
electrical theory; ability to detect by inspection defects in equipment or
systems and to make the proper adjustments and repairs;
Skilled in the use of hand tools, test
equipment and materials of the trade; and
Manual dexterity and must be in good
physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of high school diploma or GED with considerable
experience in electronic maintenance and repair of burglar and fire alarm
systems preferably supplemented by completion of recognized apprenticeship in
trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides
the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland motor Vehicle Operator’s License with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. (See Prince George’s
County Public Schools Bulletin A-26-85 dated October 8, 1984.)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
