POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director
– Early Learning is responsible for the administration of the department, as
well as providing leadership for the designing, planning, development,
implementation and monitoring of countywide curriculum and instructional
programs for prekindergarten and supporting kindergarten readiness across all
content areas.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Identifies
needs for curriculum, development and instructional program management; designs
and conducts evaluations of new and existing instructional programs and
interprets programs to professional staff, Board of Education and the
community;
Fosters relationships
with community providers to serve and support prekindergarten families within
and outside of Prince George’s County Public Schools;
Provides
support to the instructional programs through the identification, evaluation,
and selection of instructional materials, and through the development of
teacher guides;
Participates
in the selection and evaluation processes for department staff; provides the
necessary administrative and supervisory functions for appropriate leadership
of staff; supervises workload of program supervisors and instructional
specialists across all content areas;
Develops
and manages the department’s budget; monitors expenditures with regard to
instructional program maintenance, development and program improvements;
Establishes
collaborative relationships with other offices and agencies in PGCPS and the
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in support of the mission of the
department;
Participates
actively in meetings and serves on committees related to improving academic
outcomes for students; promotes research and development work to identify new
and innovative programs and practices;
Collects
and utilizes data to inform instructional decisions and monitors plans for
academic interventions; coordinates proven, research-based methods and
strategies for curricular reform;
Develops
and presents programs and related information to the Board of Education,
professional staff groups, media and the community; works with community and
school groups to build their knowledge of curriculum and instruction; and
Performs
other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough
knowledge of the instructional programs in PGCPS;
Thorough
knowledge of educational theory, research-based best practices, national
standards, and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards;
Knowledge
of the school improvement planning process;
Knowledge
of curriculum design, implementation and evaluation;
Innovative
and creative teaching with demonstrated ability to conceptualize ideas;
Possesses
excellent writing and technology skills necessary for producing comprehensive
reports and making presentations;
Ability
to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a complex school system;
Ability
to collect, analyze and use data to plan for curriculum reform;
Ability
to use systemic thinking to establish clear goals for the development of
curriculum, instruction and programs that will strengthen rigorous literacy
instruction district-wide;
Ability
to plan alignment of curriculum, assessment and instruction with state
standards;
Ability
to lead and evaluate large scale curricular or systemic projects; and
Excellent
interpersonal skills for communication and collaboration.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in
curriculum and instruction, educational leadership or a closely related field
required; Doctorate degree preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of
instructional experience and three (3) years of administrator experience
required. Previous experience as a
Principal and/or central administrator preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland Advanced Professional
Certificate with Administrator II endorsement required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.
