POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the
Director – Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for the administration of
the department, as well as providing leadership for the designing, planning,
developing and monitoring of countywide curriculum and instruction programs in
K-12 academics to include: Reading,
English, Social Studies, World Languages, Library Media and English Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL). The Director –
Curriculum and Instruction provides supervision for department staff and
provides leadership for staff in planning responsive improvements in academic
programs.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Identifies
needs for curriculum, development and instructional program management; designs
and conducts evaluations of new and existing instructional programs and
interprets programs to professional staff, Board of Education and the
community;
Provides
support to the instructional programs through the identification, evaluation
and selection of instructional materials and through the development of
instructional guides; provides leadership in designing and developing new
programs and initiatives to meet identified needs;
Participates
in the selection and evaluation processes for department staff; provides the
necessary administrative and supervisory functions for appropriate leadership
of staff; supervises workload of program supervisors and instructional
specialists across all content areas;
Develops
and manages the department’s budget; monitors expenditures with regard to
instructional program maintenance, development and program improvements;
Establishes
collaborative relationships with other offices and agencies in PGCPS and the
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in support of the mission of the
department;
Participates
actively in meetings and serves on committees related to improving academic
outcomes for students; promotes research and development work to identify new
and innovative programs and practices;
Collects
and utilizes data to inform instructional decisions and monitors plans for
academic interventions; coordinates proven, research-based methods and
strategies for curricular reform;
Develops
and presents programs and related information to the Board of Education,
professional staff groups, media and the community; works with community and
school groups to build their knowledge of curriculum and instruction;
Supervises
the literacy work in PGCPS, with the assistance of the coordinating supervisor;
and
Performs
other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Ability
to use creative and critical thinking in curriculum work, staff management and
problem solving;
Thorough
knowledge of educational theory, research-based best practices, national
standards, school improvement planning, instructional programs in PGCPS and the
Maryland College and Career Ready Standards;
Experience
with providing leadership in designing, planning and implementing instructional
programs, including designing curricular framework and the alignment of
curriculum to state standards;
Ability
to support the department’s vision and systemic theory of change, providing
support to programs within the department;
Demonstrated
experience in innovative and creating teaching; ability to conceptualize ideas
and lead and evaluate large-scale curricular projects;
Ability
to promote open communication and collaborative problem-based best practices;
excellent interpersonal skills built on communication and collaboration;
Ability
to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a complex school system;
Ability
to operate computer systems with proficiency; possesses excellent writing and
technology skills necessary for producing comprehensive reports and making
presentations.
Ability
to use systems thinking to establish clear goals that will strengthen rigorous
literacy instruction district-wide; ability to collect, analyze and use data to
plan for curriculum reform; and
Actively
pursues opportunities for life-long learning and professional growth.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s
degree from an accredited college or university in curriculum and instruction,
administration or a closely related field required; Doctorate degree preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of instructional experience and three (3) years of administrator
experience required. Previous experience
as a Principal and/or central administrator preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland Professional
Certificate with Administrator I endorsement required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.
