POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Director of Technology Operations, the Data Protection Specialist is responsible for data protection, backup/recovery and web content filtering.  The incumbent of this position performs complex multi-platform hardware and software installations and introductory training for administrative-based work stations and networks, as well as performing problem analysis specifying and executing corrective measures.  Employees in this class are given generalized instruction on assignments and are expected to bring a project to conclusion with minimal supervision. Technical assistance to customers, other programmer/analysts and computer operators will be required.  Assignments are evaluated for adherence to specifications and standards and for effective utilization of resources.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Evaluates and implements Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliant web filtering technologies such as ContentKeeper acquired by the district; reviews EdTech vendors’ privacy policy for compliance, and in consultation with Academics and Instructional Technology teams, evaluates, implements and maintains web filter policies for all staff and students;

Manages the data protection appliances and ensures backup and recovery on the data center servers by applying appropriate Service Level Agreements (SLA);

Supports the district's legal hold, investigation and compliance requirements as it pertains to litigation, eDiscovery and Maryland Public Information Act (MPIA);

Provides backup Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Scheduler support in check production, wire transfers, third-party interfaces for Payroll, Benefits, Accounts Payable and Treasury offices;

Assists remotely-located engineers in physically managing data center servers and network equipment; 

Develops and documents Help Desk problem resolution procedures and validates hardware and software problems reported by users;

Monitors, evaluates and provides administrative support for web content platforms, backup systems and other systems as assigned;

Ensures the technical performance of equipment and software maintenance is complete;

Performs critical problem resolution providing rapid response capability; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Considerable knowledge of multi-platform environments, communications, hardware and software;

Working level knowledge and experience using backup/recovery and web content filtering systems;

Working knowledge of data privacy laws including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA);

Considerable professional experience working on OS Systems, Windows, WAN and LAN technical expertise essential;

Successful customer service and technical call skills;

Ability to maintain effective and professional writing and oral communications skills; and

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, professional, technical and clerical staff.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field preferred; considerable experience in analysis and resolution of multi-platform computer problems and specialized or technical training courses in related field required.  Previous experience in data backup/recovery and/or web content filtering preferred.



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


A+ Certification from a professional institution preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.
