POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Custodial Equipment Mechanic performs complete maintenance and repair work on a variety of mechanical equipment used by the custodial staff in all county schools. Employees in this class are responsible for maintaining a wide variety of mechanical equipment such as, two motored vacuum cleaners, high speed buffers, 72" four-wheel drive tractors, mulching mowers, snow blowers, water cooled engines, weed wackers, trimmers, and portable generators.  Work is performed independently.  Work orders and supervision are received directly from the Director of Plant Operations.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Performs maintenance repairs on lawn cutting equipment, such as adjusting, welding, repairing or replacing parts;

Makes emergency field repairs on equipment in order to keep it operating at the job site;

Makes motor and blade repairs to lawn mowers kept at the schools;

Inspects all moving parts on heavy and small cutting equipment before sending to job site;

Plans best route and assists in the moving of this equipment from equipment repair shop, or from one job site to another;

Instruct custodial personnel on the proper procedure of any new or repaired equipment;

Repairs vacuum cleaners, buffers, portable generators, and other school custodial equipment at school location or in repair shop;

Visits school to examine equipment, noting condition and repairing equipment as necessary;

Maintains records and prepares reports;

Routinely delivers gas and diesel fuel to all schools; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment involved in the mechanical equipment trade;

Good knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines; skill in the use of various hand and shop tools;

Ability to diagnose defects and correct them; and

Dependability and the ability to maintain records and order parts necessary for repairs and be in good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High School diploma, including or supplemented by completion of vocational or trade school coursework, with progressively responsible experience in engine and mechanical work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of a low pressure boiler operator's certificate issued by the State of Maryland, or preferably, a stationary engineers license, with a background of study in occupational safety course.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to perform extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs. independently, and have the ability to exert force required to twist/turn equipment/tools required to perform assigned tasks. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.

Employees in this class are considered emergency personnel and therefore are expected to have residential telephone service s and possession a valid driver’s license.
