POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the general supervision of the Director of Building Services, visits facilities when necessary for the purpose of reviewing the safe operation and maintenance of boilers and equipment and instructing personnel in the operation and maintenance of boilers, ventilating systems and air conditioning systems; does related work as required.  

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Responsible technical and instructional work to assure that the building supervisor or building equipment operator is making proper effective and accurate inspections of building equipment and that the plan is in compliance with all state and federal safety regulations;

Instructs Building Equipment Operators and Building Supervisors in the safe economical operation of the plant equipment;

Bears ultimate responsibility for the proper and safe operations of the school plants (this class is distinguished from Building Equipment Operator I and II);

Advices on indoor air quality concerns to bring about a satisfactory solution to indoor air quality problems as they occur in the schools;

Teaches the Boiler Safety course and Maintenance Medic courses as needed;

Works independently under the general supervision of the Director of Plants Operations;

Bears ultimate responsibility for the proper and safe operations of the school plants (this class is distinguished from Building Equipment Operator I and II);

Inspects facilities regularly to ensure proper maintenance and operation of equipment;

Visitations of facilities with new Building Supervisors or Equipment Operators in order to in-service and review the safe operation and maintenance of building equipment, including boilers, chillers, HVAC, air handlers and ventilators;

Establishes, tracks, monitors and reports preventive maintenance schedules from School Dude Preventive Maintenance module for school based personnel;

Keeps records, prepares inspection reports and recommends solution as circumstances required; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Considerable knowledge of the assembly adjustment, and maintenance of various types of heating and ventilating equipment;

Thorough knowledge of the operation and repair of boilers, unit ventilators, air handlers, air conditioning equipment;

Ability to instruct personnel in the occupational hazards and safety techniques of the trader;

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and other officials; and

Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of large heating and air conditioning equipment.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


High School graduate, including or supplemented by completion of any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 Possession of a low pressure boilers operator’s certificate issued by the State of Maryland, or preferably, a stationary engineers license, with a background of study in occupational safety courses.

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License (Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and Passenger endorsement. Minimum of a Class A restricted preferred) with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George’s County Public Schools Bulletin P-1-88, dated July 21, 1987 and Administrative Procedure 4111, dated December 1, 2015).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


Employees in this class are considered emergency personnel and therefore are expected to have working telephone service, possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation 24 hours, seven days a week. Required to work overtime to support school system and community programs and/or respond to emergency situations. Required to work during inclement weather.
