POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under general supervision of the Director of Plant Operations, the Custodial Equipment Area Supervisor plans and supervises the Custodial Equipment Mechanics.  The employee is responsible for overseeing the overall operation of the Equipment Repair Shop, including the ordering of supplies and parts to maintain inventory.  The employee performs complete maintenance and repair work on a variety of mechanical equipment used by the custodial staff in all County schools.  This position is responsible for maintaining a wide variety of mechanical equipment such as two motored vacuum cleaners, high speed burnishes, automatic floor scrubber, floor machines, four wheel drive tractors, self-propelled mulching mowers, snow blowers, water cooled engines, grass trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Monitors the operation of the Custodial Repair Shop;

Orders supplies and parts to maintain inventory;

Performs emergency field repairs on equipment to maintain operation at the job site;

Plans best route and assists in the moving of this equipment from equipment repair shop, or from one job site to another;

Instructs custodial personnel on the proper operating procedures of any new or repaired equipment;

Repairs vacuum cleaners, buffers, floor machines, portable generators, and other school custodial equipment at school location or in repair shop;

Visits school to examine equipment, noting condition and repairing equipment;

Maintains records and prepares reports; and

Delivers gas and diesel fuel to all schools.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public School's Bulletin A-26-85 dated October 8, 1984) ;

Ability to plan and schedule personnel to the appropriate facility ensuring custodial equipment repair shop remains operational; and

Ability to direct the activities of a large number of subordinate personnel.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High school graduate with progressively responsible experience in engine and mechanical work; including or supplemented by completion of vocational or trade school courses; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of a low pressure boiler operator's certificate issued by the State of Maryland, or preferably, a stationary engineers license, with a background of study in occupational safety course.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of Custodial Equipment Mechanics.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to perform extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs. independently, and have the ability to exert force required to twist/turn equipment/tools required to perform assigned tasks. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.

The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


Employees in this class are considered emergency personnel and therefore are expected to have working telephone service, possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation 24 hours, seven days a week. Required to work overtime to support school system and community programs and/or respond to emergency situations. Required to work during inclement weather.
