POSITION SUMMARY:


  Provides Computer-Aide Design and Drafting (CADD) support to the staff of the Department of Planning and Architectural Services and the Department of Maintenance for the production of a variety of construction projects, including classroom additions, science classroom renovations, systemic replacements (roof, window, etc.), major repairs, and code corrections.  The employee will produce working drawings, including but not limited to site plans, building plans, details, and structural drawings, under the direction of staff architects and engineers and a CADD supervisor.  The employee is responsible for managing the drafting files and for maintaining the operational efficiency of the CADD system and the departmental computer network, and for coordinating the scanning of original drawings for archiving purposes.  In addition, the CADD operator will help to maintain and update the database of all school facilities, including the age, size, and one-line floor plans of the buildings.  The CADD operator will be expected to be current with new developments in the CADD field, and from time to time to make recommendations for improving the software and hardware capabilities of the system.  The CADD Operator will help to train entry level CADD employees. The incumbent of this position will perform essential CADD work to support architectural and engineering design professionals in the execution of the Capital Improvement Program.  This is a middle-level position which requires demonstrable experience with CADD-related duties, equipment management, software, and construction documentation.  The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate some flexibility in their working schedule in order to meet the demands of CADD production deadlines.  The incumbent will work directly with staff engineers and architects and will report to the Capital Improvement Program Officer.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Produces working drawings, including but not limited to site plans, building plans, details, and structural drawings, under the direction of staff architects and engineers and CADD supervisors;

Manages CADD production for multiple projects;

Responds to short-term requests for drawing as needed;

Manages the drafting files and maintains the operational efficiency of the CADD system and the departmental computer network;

Manages the scanning of as-built drawings for archiving purposes;

Helps to maintain and update the database of all school facilities, including the age, size, and one-line floor plans of the buildings; and

Helps to train entry-level personnel in all of the above CADD activities.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Through familiarity with architectural drafting principles as they apply to CADD work (drawing format, construction terms, layering conventions, etc.);

Knowledge of the AutoCAD 13 is required;

Knowledge of the Generic CADD program, Raster Vector Conversion programs, and scanning techniques is desirable;

Demonstrable experience in setting up and maintaining computer equipment;

Experience with managing multiple projects;

Ability to respond quickly and flexibly to short-term requests for drawings without disrupting the continuity of long-term projects; and

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment with other design professionals and outside consultants, and to train entry-level CADD employee(s) in scanning activities and elementary drafting activities.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Minimum three years' experience working in architectural office, engineer's office, or related design fields, with demonstrable responsibilities for production of complex design projects, for managing multiple projects, and for maintaining the computer system.  In addition, candidate must have minimum associate's degree from an accredited institution in computer sciences or a related field, with a specialty in CADD (college degree preferred with emphasis in architecture and construction detailing); or equivalent courses in computer procedures and operational techniques, also with a specialty in CADD.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Maryland State Motor Vehicle Operator's License preferred.
