POSITION SUMMARY:


The Bus Driver Trainer designs, plans, organizes and directs classroom and on-the-job bus driver training programs for Bus Driver and Bus Attendant positions in accordance with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) - Office of Transportation, Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Certified Driver Trainer, and Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) policies and procedures, regulations, and laws. Employees in this classification evaluates effective modes of training delivery e.g., classroom, on-the-job, virtual, etc. to optimize training effectiveness, training costs, and environmental impact; assesses the bus driver training needs by interviewing and monitoring the job performance of Bus Driver and Bus Attendant positions; and maintains training and student transport documents and records. 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Trains Bus Driver and Bus Attendant positions on safety policies and procedures as it relates to student transport, safe operation of Board of Education vehicles, customer service, and professionalism;

Instructs Bus Driver and Bus Attendant positions in the total operation of the Board of Education vehicles;

Prepares training materials on safety, customer service, and student management for students with and/or without intellectual and developmental disabilities;

Coordinates, facilities, and communicates safety meetings and updates supervisors of all training and retraining sessions;

Presents information in a variety of instructional formats e.g., role playing, group discussions, videos, and lectures;

Assists schools in the management of safe school bus traffic flow and assigned events;

Instructs Bus Drivers and Bus Attendant positions in the complete behind-the-wheel program under the guidance of an instructor designated by the instructor’s supervisor or designee;

Assists Bus Drivers and Bus Attendant positions with the completion and/or accuracy of incident and accident reports and other documents;

Maintains and provides a positive and professional atmosphere and environment conducive to training, coaching, and teaching Board of Education employees;

Monitors, evaluates, and records training activities; Maintain required training records, prepares reports, and updates schedules and calendars;

Evaluates training materials e.g., handouts;

Performs annual required Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) school Bus Driver behind the wheel road observations and driver techniques;

Performs annual Bus Attendants pupil hand-on skills observations; and

Performs other related transport job related duties. 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Must possess a valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License to drive a school bus and a valid Maryland Class B certification;

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements motor vehicle license;

Must meet all MVA requirements for school vehicle drivers and remain in compliance with COMAR regulations;

Knowledge of Prince George’s County Administrative Policies and Procedures, Transportation Administrative Procedures Handbook, Regulations for Supporting Personnel and ACE/AFSCME Local 2250 Negotiated Contract;

Ability to successfully complete the certification State Driver Trainer requirements of Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) within 90 days after hire;

Ability to successfully complete First Aide and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) training within 90 days after hire;

Knowledge of the operation and mechanical functioning of school buses;

Knowledge of PGCPS Administrative Policies and Procedures;

Knowledge of COMAR, local, state, and federal laws, practices, administrative policies and procedures regarding the operation of school buses and employee conduct;

Ability to effectively communicate information and work in a culturally diverse environment;

Ability to use computer software applications to enter data or create training materials; 

Ability to instruct and adhere to all County, State, and federal policies and procedures, practices and laws;

Ability to actively participate in the state School Bus Driver Instructor workshops and Driver Improvement Program (DIP); and

 

Ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership, communication. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Completion of high school diploma or GED required; and minimum of three (3) years of satisfactory school bus driving work experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, see, and drive. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, lift, pull, push, grasp, climb, balance, and conduct repetitive wrist and/or hand movements. Employee must have the ability to sit in the bus driver seat, reach the steering wheel and grasp with both hands, reach the pedals, and wear a seat belt properly. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. and/or 100 lbs. when operating a wheelchair lift and assisting a special-needs student.
