POSITION SUMMARY:
The Braille Transcriber
produces instructional materials for students with visual impairments. This
work involves transcribing instructional materials and
teacher/county-assessments into braille to include literary, science, and mathematics
materials for all grade levels.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Transcribes instructional materials and assessments into
braille with the use of a computer, braille translation software, and braille
embosser;
Designs and creates maps and graphs into tactile
graphics;
Makes use of a variety of braille codes including Unified
English Braille, Nemeth Code for Mathematics and Science, Chemistry Code, and
Foreign Language Code;
Consults with teachers of the visually
impaired/orientation and mobility specialists regarding the individual
transcription needs of students;
Maintains updates of braille code and software changes;
Assists with the implementation of the Individualized
Education Plans (IEPs) of students with visual impairments;
Delivers materials to schools; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of Nemeth Code for Mathematics and Science;
Extensive knowledge of Tactile Graphics Guidelines, techniques,
equipment, and materials to produce tactile graphics e.g., Pictures in a Flash,
thermoform machine;
Extensive knowledge of the operation of various braille embossers;
Basic computer knowledge;
Ability to use braillewriter for braille production;
Knowledge of the Duxbury Braille Translation software;
Ability to type 35 words per minute;
Knowledge Microsoft Word;
Ability to demonstrate effective oral communication and writing skills;
Ability to work as a team member;
Must have reliable transportation to deliver braille materials.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion
of high school diploma required. Associate’s degree preferred with prior
experience or familiarity with braille; or any equivalent combination of
experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Hold
or acquire National Literary Braille Transcription
certification within one year of employment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
