POSITION SUMMARY:


  Performs various assembly, binding and finishing tasks on various types of binding and related equipment; performs other print shop related work as required. Employees in this class are primarily responsible for the set-up, operation, adjustment, preventive maintenance and minor repairs of a wide variety of bindery equipment and perform hand operations to finish printed materials into signatures, books, pads, packages. Employee may operate electronic copiers and duplicators. Characteristically work is considered average. Employee may also be required to perform any other type of work which can be effectively achieved within their grade designation. Normal supervision is received from the Production Coordinator, operator of higher grade level, or person designated by the Manager of Printing Services. The employee receives work assignments in the form of oral or written work orders and sketches from their supervisor or a designated higher graded operator.  Work assignments are carried out independently and in accordance with established methods techniques and procedures.  Work may be checked or spot-checked upon completion, for compliance to specifications; the supervisor or designated person is usually available to provide technical advice and assistance on unusual or very difficult machine problems that require deviation from the standard work practices.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Sets-up, makes ready, operates, and  performs preventive maintenance to a wide variety of bindery equipment such as: saddle stitcher, envelope inserter, perfect binder, signature gatherer, power paper cutter, three knife trimmer, perfect binder and floor model folders;

The employee is required to be able to set-up, make ready, and operate all equipment in the lower bindery grades;

Operates electronic Copiers and document publishers as required;

Performs hand collating, gathering, padding, packaging, boxing, labeling and other material handling tasks;

Continuously monitors and makes necessary adjustments to equipment to insure conformance to given job specifications in order to minimize waste and spoilage;

Accurately records all time and materials incident to the various operations performed in the production of each job;

Maintains the minimum Industry and Printing Services production and quality standards;

May assist in performing routine camera and stripping operations;

Under supervision, may assist or be trained in the operation of any other Bindery equipment of a more complex nature;

Assists in training, and provides guidance to other employees of same or lower grade level;

Performs routine clerical tasks incident to the work. Adheres to and follows all safety regulations as established for the Department;

Maintains work area to be clean, orderly, and hazard free; and

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Considerable knowledge of the set-up,  operation, adjustment, operators' preventive maintenance and minor repair of  bindery equipment as designated for this particular grade level, as well as equipment in the lower bindery grade levels;

A minimum of 5 years in the printing field, of which 3 years (6,000 hours) must be in the operation of complex bindery equipment or, at the Bindery I level,  and a working knowledge of electronic copiers. Some knowledge of basic lithography is desirable;

Working knowledge of the operation of electronic copiers and duplicators; some knowledge of offset lithography, or basic operations at the Press Operator I level;

Ability to operate equipment so as to achieve  the prescribed level of quality and production;

Ability to learn, within a reasonable amount of time, the set-up, operation, operators' preventive maintenance of any new equipment which is designated to be within the employees' particular classification and grade level;

Ability to understand and follow instructions by means of written or other forms of communication;

Ability to make arithmetical computations and must also be familiar with the other shop mathematics and units of measure to understand dimensional requirements contained in work orders;

Ability to perform assigned clerical tasks and to adhere to prescribed routine;

Ability to work under pressure and meet short term deadlines;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers; and

Ability to continually stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach and sufficient physical strength to permit the handling of supplies and equipment used.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of high school or equivalent; or any other combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

No direct supervisory responsibilities. May assist in providing training and guidance to other lower grade level employees.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to spend prolonged periods of time standing during the operation of binding equipment while performing bindery operations. Employees in this class continually lift, carry, or otherwise handle printed material and paper stock weighing up to 40 lbs. and, occasionally, items or materials weighing up to 80 lbs. without the help of any mechanical devices, and up to 2,000 lbs. when utilizing mechanical devices such as fork-lifts or pallet-jacks. There is frequent stooping, bending, and reaching to make machine adjustments, remove misrouted materials and other operational activities. In most instances the employee is required to maintain a work pace consistent with the speed of operating machinery and/or the needs of the other workers.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:


Other
  The employee is exposed to low frequency noise generated by machine operations and vibrations during production periods.  The operator is exposed to skin irritations and unpleasant odors/fumes from inks, solvents, acids, and other chemicals normally associated with pressroom operations.  Also the operator is exposed to hazards from moving parts on equipment and minor cuts from paper materials.
