POSITION SUMMARY:


  Performs supervisory and skilled work in the repair, designing and replacing of upholstery and harnesses in a variety of school buses and Board of Education vehicles. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a Journeyman Automotive Upholsterer I in the repair and replacing of upholstery. Work involves independent judgment in assigning duties, and selection repair methods to meet job requirements. Assignments are received orally and in written form and the work is done independently under the supervision of the Automotive Maintenance Foreman I of the Central Garage.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Designs patterns for school bus seats, backs, and seat rail pads;

Cuts out and sews from designed patterns upholstery material for seats and backs of buses and other Board of Education vehicles;

Replaces upholstery on school buses and vehicles by taking off damaged covers, repairing metal frames seat springs and adjusting seat mechanisms, if necessary, and installing new ones;

Cuts out, sews and installs crash pads, foam rubber for crash pads, gussets, door hinge covers, and seat belt replacement;

Designs, manufactures and installs custom fit harnesses and restraints for individual handicapped children;

Modifies bus seats to accommodate special harnesses, restraints and seat belts;

Modifies tot seats to prevent children from sliding out;

Repairs and reupholsters office furniture;

Makes minor repairs to sewing machines and performs preventive maintenance;

Keeps records and fills out work orders;

Supervises and trains Automotive Upholsterer I and seasonal workers;

May assist Automotive Glass Technician in cutting and installing windshields and other glass; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and practices of the trade;

Thorough knowledge of the procedures used in the designing and cutting of patterns, and the sewing and repairing of variety of fabric items;

Good knowledge of the quality and characteristics of a variety of fabrics;

Ability to plan and lay out work for self and others;

Skill in care and use of special tools of the trade; ability to modify or develop new design patterns;

Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions;

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

Ability to make arithmetical computations and tabulations; and

Ability to make accurate time and material estimates and to keep records pertaining to work; and must be in good physical condition for working in inclement weather and other conditions related to outside night work.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of a high school diploma or GED with considerable experience in upholstery trade supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.  Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required or the ability to obtain within the probationary period for new employees or within 6 months of obtaining the position for current PGCPS employees; CDL Class "A" with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake) preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly encouraged.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
