POSITION SUMMARY:


  Performs skilled work in the repair and replacing of upholstery and harnesses in a variety of school buses and Board of Education vehicles. This is highly skilled work involving responsibility for the performance of difficult and specialized upholstery and harness maintenance and repair work of school busses and Board of Education vehicles. The incumbent of this position uses independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the job. Work is done independently under the supervision of the Automotive Upholsterer II.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Repairs tears, slits, and burns to surface area of scats, backs, and side rails on buses and Board of Education vehicles using a special chemical repair kit;

Cuts and sews upholstery material from patterns for seats and backs of buses and other Board of Education vehicles;

Replaces upholstery on school buses and other Board vehicles by taking off damaged covers, repairing metal frames if necessary, and replacing with new ones;

Cuts out, sews and installs crash pads, foam rubber for crash pads, gussets, door hinge covers, and harness straps for regular and orthopedic buses;

Repairs and replaces seat springs on all buses and Board of Education vehicles;

May assist the Automotive Glass Technician in cutting and replacing broken windshields, side glass and door glass on school buses and other Board of Education vehicles;

Keeps records and fills out work orders and time sheets; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and practices of the trade;

Good knowledge of the procedures used in the making and cutting of patterns, and the sewing and repairing of variety of fabric items;

Working knowledge of the quality and characteristics of a variety of fabrics;

Skill and care in the use of special tools of the trade;

Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and

Ability to make arithmetical computations and tabulations; and must be in good physical condition for working in inclement weather and other conditions related to outside night work.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of a high school diploma or GED with some experience in upholstery work, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.  Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required or the ability to obtain within the probationary period for new employees or within 6 months of obtaining the position for current PGCPS employees; CDL Class "A" with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake) preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly encouraged.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
