POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the general supervision of the Principal and Director of Interscholastic Athletics, the Athletic Director will be responsible for providing overall leadership and coordination among the various student athletic activities, and facilitate programs that provide Prince George's County Public Schools’ students with the best possible interscholastic experience that is aligned with the mission and core beliefs of the Prince George's County Public School system.      

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Organizing and administering the interscholastic athletic program for his/her high school and assigned school(s) in accordance with the athletic director handbook;

Working with appropriate central office staff to plan, schedule and oversee all interscholastic athletic events, including supervising home and away events as directed, and coordinate schedules with other activities within the school and with other schools;

Overseeing all Athletic Coaches assigned to his/her high school;

Verifying the eligibility of each student athlete as determined by the coach in cooperation with the Principal;

Serving as the in-school interpreter of the county and state athletic association’s rules and regulations;

Arranging all details for practice items of teams, home athletic contests including gymnasium services, field assistance, security and dressing facilities for officials;

Ensuring, with the cooperation of the coach, that all equipment for each sport is purchased, issued, collected, cleaned, reconditioned and stored;

Ensuring that all coaches receive from each student athlete participation forms and medical evaluation forms from parents and doctors prior to taking part in any practice session;

Arranging transportation for all athletic events;

Preparing overall athletic budget and individual expenditures by all members of the coaching staff with the approval of the principal(s);

Ensuring that all coaches at the end of each sport season submit an updated inventory and budget request for the following school year;

Submitting the appropriate athletic documentation including but not limited to, general athletic information, purchase orders, coach lists, bus schedules, attendance registers, and accident report forms; 

Providing timely athletic schedules and all appropriate changes to sport commissioners for the assignment of officials;

Providing leadership with the principal in the selection and assignment of athletic coaches;

Coordinating and participating in preparations for events, including preparation of facilities, securing of necessary temporary personnel (e.g. ticket sellers,  police, public address crews, medical personnel, and game officials), arranging for transportation, allotment of concessions, preparation for traffic and crowd control and arrangement of cleanup and repair after events;

Assisting in fostering good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program;

Serving as a liaison to school’s Athletic Booster organizations;

Attending countywide meetings, when scheduled, and conducting regular coaches meetings;

Providing coaches, athletes, administrative staff and the school community with information pertaining to current trends and policies in interscholastic athletics;

Collaborating with the principal on the supervision, direction and evaluation of all coaches; and

Performing other duties as assigned.


 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Prior successful leadership experience related to the oversight and management of a student athletic program;

Comprehensive knowledge of the philosophy, program, practice and organizational structure of a comprehensive student athletic programs;

Ability to plan, organize and direct student athletic programs;

Ability to collaborate with different schools and community stakeholders;

Ability to schedule and coordinate activities in a timely manner;

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing;

Ability to work flexible hours and days as determined by the needs of the student athletic program; and

Ability to effectively supervise and instruct employees.


 

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Bachelor’s degree or higher in an applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university; a minimum of four (4) years of successful teaching with at least two (2) years of coaching and other athletic administrator experience, preferably at the secondary level.


 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

A professional certificate appropriate to area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education, in addition to a Registered Athletic Administrator or Certified Athletic Administrator Certificate in the required period.


 

 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Oversees and directs the work of athletic head coaches.
