POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel - Litigation will be responsible for representing the Prince George’s County Board of Education and its employees in local, state and federal litigation matters.  

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Provides counsel and defense in matters filed before the District Court, Circuit Court and U.S. District Courts;

Represents the Board of Education of Prince George’s County in litigation matters, including but not limited to, torts, premises liability, contracts, real estate disputes and employment matters;

Handles litigation discovery, taking and defending depositions, conducting witness interviews, drafting and arguing pleadings and motions, day-to-day case management and trial preparation;

Represents the Board of Education of Prince George’s County and its employees in appeals before the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, Court of Appeals of Maryland and Federal Appeals;

Reviews and evaluates subrogation claims and represents Prince George’s County Board of Education in court proceedings and mediations on subrogation matters;

Assists the General Counsel in the review, monitoring, evaluation, management and supervision of litigation matters handled by outside counsel;

Drafts agreements, releases and other legal documents;

Performs other duties as required by the General Counsel associated with defense litigation representation and litigation management;

Participates in professional development and in-service training of school system administrative staff and employees; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Considerable knowledge of public school administration and statutory immunity provisions and insurance requirements of school systems in the State of Maryland;

Knowledge and familiarity with State and Federal Rules of Procedure;

Substantial litigation experience trying complex and civil matters;

Superior written and oral communication skills;

Ability to manage and work independently in large volume litigation practice; and

Effective human relations skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Doctorate of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school required. Admission to the Maryland Bar required; admission to the Federal Bar preferred.  A minimum of five (5) years of experience in presenting and/or defending claims before Circuit and/or Federal Court required; previous legal experience in representing a school board or public organization preferred.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
