POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Air Compressor Operator performs moderately skilled work in the operation of an air compressor in association with an air hammer, backfill tamper, chipping hammer or trench digger, etc. as required in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Making pre-operation check of vehicles, air compressors, and equipment;

Insuring proper water, fuel, oil and tire pressure levels;

Observing and reporting vehicle and air compressor malfunctioning;

Starting compressor by pre-described operational instructions;

Checking valves, hoses, air pressure gauges to assure that compressor is operating properly;

Performing minor maintenance on air hammer and compressor, etc., concerning valves, hoses, and the sharpening bits;

Cutting and breaking concrete, blacktop, frozen soil, walls and ice with air hammer;

Cutting up curbs and sidewalks for new installation or wheel chair ramps;

Cutting area around potholes and old asphalt curbs, tennis courts or perimeter lines for new parking lots, and curb holes for gas lines in bus lots;

Cutting broken water mains, stopped up sewers and broken oil lines;   

Compacting as required all backfill material placed in ditches;

Working with another employee who will relieve the operator working with the air hammer and other associated air equipment, and will also assist in the implementation of all safety precautions when necessary; and

Performing labor and driving tasks as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Ability to perform a variety of precise, moderately skilled cutting and breaking tasks;

Ability to read and write English fluently;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and

Ability to perform heavy manual work for an extended period of time under varying conditions.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High school diploma or GED; experience in operation of heavy power tools; or any equivalent combination of full-time experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class A), at time of appointment, and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
