UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Capitol Heights Elementary principal Nina Lattimore and William Paca Elementary principal Dorothy Clowers have been nominated for the Arts Education in Maryland School Alliance (AEMS) Arts Leadership Recognition Award.

Both schools boast arts integration programs -- an innovative teaching strategy that fuses the visual and performing arts with English Language Arts, social studies, science and writing.

The Arts Leadership Recognition Award is given to Maryland public school principals who provide a creative learning environment and support teaching in and through the arts.

“As an eight-year-old student, I learned Spanish through the integration of dance, and eventually received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the language,” said Lattimore. “I know firsthand how arts education can contribute to student learning and achieving.”

“It’s amazing to see how infusing the arts in the curriculum has improved students’ understanding of the content areas and enhanced their critical thinking skills,” said Clowers.

The awards will be given Wednesday, November 2 at the AEMS Arts Leadership Recognition Breakfast and Forum in Baltimore.
