    Ms. Floyd-CooperDear MLK Family:

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I am honored to begin my first year of service as the proud principal of one the best middle schools in Prince George’s County!  I look forward to celebrating our students’ as they excel not only in academic pursuits, but also in their responsible and respectful interactions with both our staff and with one another.  I am equally excited about the positive relationships that will be fostered between teachers and parents to further enhance the potential for our students to leverage all of MLK’s academic offerings and supports.

As members of the MLK community “collaborate to create a greater Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School”, staff will be empowered to both identify and implement research based strategies to close the achievement gap and chart a path toward Success for All.  While there is ALWAYS room for improvement, we will strategically continue to support our systemic focus on literacy with a laser focus on building students’ numeracy capacity and building their capacity to write well across a variety of disciplines.  The MLK school community can expect that my administrative team and I will keep our commitment to invest in our staff and minimize barriers to widespread school improvement. We will do this by building a positive culture where students are ACTIVELY engaged in connected learning experiences that will promote a love of learning and hopefully support them in identifying their passions.  Our aim is to positively impact the lives of every child we serve, and with your support, transforming the way in which they engage with and see learning, their peers, their communities and ultimately their bright future.

I look forward to an amazingly successful year with each of my staff and students. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to consider how you might get involved in support of our GREAT SCHOOL.  The Martin Luther King Middle School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a great way to do this.  Your support of MLK’s PTO has long been a significant and POWERFUL component of our school's tradition of excellence.  Together, we can make the 2017-18 school year at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School one of our best year yet!  I’m READY! Are you with me?

    Excitedly,

    Rotunda L. Floyd-Cooper
